When it comes to digital preservation, the question that we come up against most often is “why now?” and the answer that we most commonly give is in relation to the costs and risks of doing nothing. These tend to fall into the following categories:
- Opportunity cost
- Non-Compliance Risk
- Data Loss
- Financial Loss
In order to engage your internal stakeholders to progress your project you will need to produce a business case and in order to do this, a few key questions need to be answered:
- What form will your argument take? Formal proposal, preexisting form such as a Project initiation document (PID) or submission to the project board?
- do I need to write a formal document? Or do I need to convince a room full of people?
- How do I do that?
- What is the cost of doing nothing?
